It depends who you ask these days. Yoga is often looked upon as some sort of contorting-exercise regime. It is common to hear people say "I cant do yoga - I am not flexible." The truth is Yoga is about a state of mind, and is not limited to a state of the body. The practice of yoga is a system of practices that really teach us how to live our best life - and that includes integrating mindful movements that are intended to take care of every area of your body. The reason to do a pose is not to look like the cover of a yoga magazine. Rather, the reason to do a pose is to take care of the area in your body that is being touched, stretched and strengthened by the pose. This is why yoga has nothing to do with flexibility. The point of yoga is not to get flexible. That might be the goal of gymnastics. The point of yoga is to consciously take care of yourself, which includes your body. However, just as important is taking care of your mind - and this happens by adopting a mental state of acceptance while you go through the poses.
