Are you tired of B-S advertising? I am. I mean I really am. Especially when I see the same kind of B-S over and over and it makes me sad that people fall for it.
Here’s 2 examples I saw in the last 2 days:
“Get the secrets to how I built my six-figure business in six months”
Oh and This:
“Get Rid of Belly Fat Fast While Eating What You Want”
And what’s so ridiculous is I bet you’ve seen these exact phrases yourself. Many.many.times.
What they don’t tell you in this flashy B-S marketing is Your.Starting.Point and all the hard work entailed to get even close to these final results.
Look—starting point is pivotal.
If somebody’s been pounding the business-pavement day and night for years and finally hits $99 999, and then in the next 6 months they make their first 6 figures, THAT is different than starting at ground zero and making 6 figures in 6 months.
99.99% of start-up entrepreneurs will not make 6 figures in 6-months unless of course they just got a massive grant or venture capital/angel investment…. And then really, can you call that 6 figures in 6 months or is that just a loan ;)?
And yet it sounds so sparkly and seductive that everyone wants to know HOW can I do that!?
People hear about online marketing and massive 6-7-figure launches. As if there are 8 secrets that will get you there if only you follow the formula and blueprint. What they don’t tell you is the 6-7 years or trial and err. The endless networking events and strategic alliances they’ve formed over the years, and al the joint-venture affiliate marketing that’s pretty much necessary to reach that many people to make that much money from one product in one launch.
Because you wanna know the truth? Sometimes when you’re starting out it’s a killer to even pull in $1000 a month. But hearing that is scary and confronting because it’s a more tangible number that many start-up entrepreneurs can relate to.
It’s actually easier to hear about a massive lucrative far-fetched number, the ever elusive 6-figures than a realistic number that is actually scarier to look at.
How about making 1-3K/month, or a salary of 35-45K/year to start and setting up a plan to work on making that happen?
Because honestly, if you can pull that in, in your first year of business you are doing something amazing.
Don’t ever believe anyone who tells you that you can make 6 figures in 6 months if you’re brand new to your field/business. It simply takes time to make connections, grow your network, and learn from trial and err what works for you in your business.
If you’re already pulling in 85-95 K, and you’re about to break through to the next threshold, that is a whole different ballgame. Then certainly, maybe there are a few specific things you can start to implement to get to the next level.
But what I’ve found is that the “6 Figures in 6 Months” bull-crap is often being served up to people just starting out.
People who perhaps made close to 6 figures in their last corporate jobs and want to buy into the fantasy that they can easily start their own business and have things move that fast.
Or people who are tired of working 12-hour night-shifts responsible for people’s lives and want to find a new way to make money with less stress and headache. “Oh, what a dream it would be, 6 figures in 6 months – Take me there!”
And it’s just like that other common ad we see (and I saw this one walking past a store in my neighborhood) “Lose belly fat easy”
First of all if you talk to anyone who knows the science of the body – it is IMPOSSIBLE to target belly fat. You can lose fat, you can gain muscle, but you cannot choose where you will lose the weight. Sure, chances are you will lose belly fat if you restrict your calories and exercise – but the Big Lie is in the Pill. Because these ads are often for a pill or easy-button solution.
The truth is you have to be extremely disciplined with your diet and exercise for a flat belly. You cannot sit on the couch, eat potato chips and take a “flat belly pill” and be toned and muscular and bikini-ready.
But of course it’s the ever elusive dream we’d all like to buy into.
Here’s the thing, whether its lifestyle or business – there is no easy button.
What there is available to you is education. And support.
You can learn about the different types of exercises and foods that will help you feel good and energized and as a natural by-product you’ll reap the benefits of a leaner body. You need to learn, experiment with what will actually work for you, do the hard disciplined work, and then reap the benefits. You may choose to hire a fitness/health coach to help you through the process and for the extra support.
Same goes with the entrepreneurial journey: You can learn about business and various strategies to help move your business forward so that you work with more focused intention and a solid plan, but still, you’ll need to test out what you learn, likely flop and flounder a little with mini successes in between, and as you continue to implement what you’ve learned and do the work, you’ll benefit from your hard work and bring in money from your creative business pursuits. You may choose to hire a business coach to help you through the process and for the extra support.
But none of this is overnight. None of this is an easy 6-month formula.
Marketing is vital to any business. Marketing is the way you get to share with people what you have to offer and let people know how you can help them and help people decide if what you have to offer is a good fit for their needs.
There is nothing wrong with marketing. You need to market to let people know you exist and to help the people who need what you have to give. There is something wrong with making sensational B-S claims.
There has to be a better way. There is a better way. It’s heart-to-heart honest marketing where all you’re doing is having an honest conversation and building a relationship with people by showing them what you have to offer and figuring out if you’re a right fit for their needs.
And our world, more than ever before, we are getting smarter. Our B-S-meters are on.
So for the love of marketing, please, I urge ya’ll – Please stop making insane promises that are B-S.
There’s a better way to share your amazing offerings without falling into the B-S-trap.
I’d love to hear from you. What do you think of this kind of marketing? Do you ever struggle with finding that balance between sensational headlines to grab attention and feeling more honest with how you communicate things?
And if you happen to be in the 1% of the population who started from NOTHING (0$ coming in and close to zero contacts) and literally made 6 figures in 6 months, I want to hear from you 😉
